Compare the operating model first
| Need | WordPress | Shopify | WooCommerce |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary job | Manage flexible business pages and content. | Run a hosted store and its catalogue. | Add a store to WordPress. |
| Editing | Page/content editing depends on the build and permissions. | Product admin plus theme editing for the storefront. | WordPress content alongside store product/order tools. |
| Hosting | Choose and maintain the hosting arrangement. | Platform hosting is part of the hosted model. | Hosting must suit WordPress and the store workload. |
| Extensions | Themes/plugins require selection and care. | Themes/apps and plan capabilities need checking. | WordPress/WooCommerce extensions require testing and licences. |
| Good brief question | What must editors update without technical help? | Which catalogue and checkout requirements fit the platform? | Who maintains the store and its integrations? |
For an enquiry-led business site
Start with WordPress if the main job is publishing services, evidence and resources with a practical editing workflow. CodingPie can use Elementor where it fits the project. An online payment or booking requirement may be a separate integration rather than a reason to build a full shop.
Ask to see how your team would edit an ordinary page, add a service and update an image. The CMS name alone does not establish how usable the finished setup will be.
For an online shop
Shopify can simplify the hosting arrangement, but check required app features and checkout customisation against the chosen plan. WooCommerce offers a WordPress-based store with choices over hosting and extensions; that also means arranging updates, backups and testing.
Give either platform a sample catalogue and a difficult real-world order scenario before choosing. Product options, delivery rules, data migration and integrations can reveal requirements that a theme demonstration does not.
Do not compare the software download price alone
Compare build scope, hosting, subscription or licence costs, payment-provider fees and the time needed to maintain the site. Current third-party prices depend on region, billing and requirements, so they are intentionally not estimated here.
Content and catalogue migration need their own checks whichever platform wins. Confirm what data can be imported, what needs cleaning and which existing URLs should be preserved.
Bring these five answers to a platform discussion
- What are customers trying to do: enquire, book, buy, or a combination?
- What does your content or product catalogue look like today?
- Which stock, payment, delivery or business-system integrations are essential?
- Who edits the site and who handles technical maintenance?
- What is the build budget and the ongoing operating budget?
